"Zaccheus Repents" Bible Skit

Zaccheus-in-tree
This is a simple skit that shows the well known story of Zaccheus. Sometimes having the children in your class act out the story helps them understand the sequence of events. This can be done as simply as having the children read the script while acting it out or as elaborate with costumes and a stage. Have fun with it!
Zaccheus Converted: Luke 19:1-10 (NASB)
Characters:

  • Narrator
  • Jesus
  • Zaccheus
  • Crowd #1 & #2 (these could be 2 children or 2 groups of children)

Props:

  • Jericho sign
  • money (play or real)
  • chair (as the tree)

(Jesus walks towards a sign that says “Jericho”)
Narrator: Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
(Enter Zaccheus counting his money)
Narrator: And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.
Crowd Member #1: Jesus is coming!
Crowd Member #2: He’s coming this way!
(Zaccheus looks to the left and to the right to figure out how to see Jesus)
Zaccheus: I can’t see him!
Narrator: Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.
(Zaccheus stands on the chair to act like he’s climbing the tree)
Jesus: (walking by and looking up at Zaccheus) Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.
Zaccheus: (hurries down the “tree”) Yes, of course! Come this way!
(Zaccheus brings Jesus to his house or just walking away from where they were)
Crowd #1 & 2: (grumbling) He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.
Zaccheus: (stops walking and talks in a serious manner) Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.
Jesus: (pleased) Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
