This kids devotional is designed to be done between a parent and their daughter; it teaches young girls about beauty and about the love of Christ. Often kids have an idea that God is far away, but this devotional draws the understanding of God close to the young girl.
Devotional Reinforcement:
A Bottle of perfume
Pre-Devotional Questions:
- What is beauty?
- What makes you feel beautiful?
- Do you think God cares about beauty?
Devotional:
You are beautiful because God created you beautiful.
Let me tell you a story about a woman in the Bible, we never learn the name of this woman, but we know that this woman was sinful. Do you know what sin is? (give her time to answer). Sin is anything that breaks God’s heart, sin is anything that we would consider bad.
While Jesus was a guest at a feast in someone’s home the woman showed up with a very expensive bottle of perfume. The woman took her perfume and poured it on Jesus’ head. When the other guests at the feast saw what the woman had done they judged her and said ugly things about her.
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” (Mark 14:6, ESV)
Let your daughter smell the perfume
Questions:
- Doesn’t the perfume smell lovely?
- What made this woman beautiful? (Answer: It was her love for Jesus)
- Why did Jesus stand up for the woman? (Answer: Jesus loved the woman)
Say: The woman was pouring the perfume on Jesus’ feet because she knew that she was sinful and she knew that Jesus would forgive her. Jesus loves all of his daughters, including you, and Jesus always forgives those who ask for forgiveness. Beauty comes from within, and Jesus created you with a beautiful heart. Did you know that God wants to be close to you? (wait to her to answer). You can always talk with God; he hears your every prayer. Psalm 141 says, “Let my prayer be counted as incense before you.” An incense is like perfume and Jesus finds your prayers to be as lovely as perfume.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, I want to be close to you. Thank you for creating me beautiful, thank you for giving me a beautiful heart. I am sorry for my sin, I pray that you can forgive me and that once again I can be washed clean as snow. Thank you for being my friend and for always listening to me. I love you so much Jesus! Amen.
