I’ve struggled for quite some time to help the 5th and 6th graders in my Sunday school class understand the importance of daily bible reading and prayer. It can be challenging for anyone to start (and stick with) the habit of daily time with the Lord, but it’s even more true for today’s youth who are busier and face more distractions than ever! So I put together a monthly devotional for kids with a few verses and a question they can answer in a journal to start learning how to study God’s word. The first month’s devotions are entitled, “What is Hope?” and there is an optional instruction page to explain the process.

- We’ve also uploaded the WORD document format if you’d like to edit or personalize.
One of the cool things about this idea is children can go at their own pace and not necessarily have to fit all the devotions in one month. It could also be used for incentive prizes to see which child can remember to do the most devotions. In addition, having a guide on what children are studying gives parents and teachers an idea on what to discuss with them and how they can help the children grow in Christ.
So, give it a try! And keep an eye out for more devotions that will help kids take responsibility for their growth in the faith.
