Introduce your class to the wonder of the resurrection using this “He Is Risen” object lesson. This visual aid will help kids “see” that Christ is risen from the grave, alive again just as Acts 3:15 describes: “You have killed the author of life but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of that.” You’ll have to do a little work beforehand but it will be totally worth it.
What You’ll Need
- Two eggs (maybe more if you break one)
- Scotch tape
- An egg carton for storage and transport
- An awl
- Bowl
- Soap
- Water
- Cloth
How to Prepare the Egg
- Wash the eggs you plan to blow with soap and water. Dry them with a cloth.
- Put two small pieces of scotch tape on either end of the egg. This will keep the egg shell from cracking when you drill a whole in it.
- Hold the egg in your hand, drilling a small hole in one end with the awl. It’s best to use an awl that has is small in diameter.
- Turn the egg over, keeping it over the bowl and poke another hole in the egg.
- Using the awl again or a toothpick, pierce the yolk. The yolk must be pierced to pass through the hole.
- Remove the tape.
- Hold the egg over the bowl and allow it to drain.
- Use your mouth to gently blow the egg out of the shell. Be patient, it might take a little time.
- Put the emptied egg in the carton along with the whole egg. Remember, kids should not see the holes when you use them.
Let’s Teach
Today I want to talk to you about the resurrection of Jesus. Who knows what resurrection means? (Allow kids to answer.) That’s right. If someone dies but comes back to life, he or she has been resurrected. Jesus once resurrected a man, his name was Lazarus. In fact, Jesus resurrected a few people during his ministry. After he died on the cross, his Father resurrected him. They put his body in the tomb but when they went back, he was gone! He had been resurrected.
To show you what I mean, I have these eggs I here. Who knows what is hidden inside the eggshell? That’s right!ย A yolk and an egg white. Let’s crack it open and see for ourselves what’s inside. (Hold up the regular egg. Crack it and let the egg drop into the bowl.) Look at that! Just as we suspected. There was an egg inside that shell. Nothing resurrected here.
I wonder if there is an egg in this one. What do you think? (Let kids answer.) We can find out! (Carefully crack the egg and reveal that the egg is empty!) Oh my! Look at that! The shell is empty! There is no egg here! I wonder if this egg has been resurrected? (Have a good laugh with the kids.) Well, I’m not sure an egg has ever been resurrected but I know Jesus did rise again! He rose and is now with his Father! Isn’t that good news?
