Teaching Plan: The Fourth Day of Creation

Bible Lesson Introduction

  • Have the children glue a yellow star onto a popsicle stick. Make sure that you write each child’s name on their star.

Bible Lesson
Read Genesis 1:14-19 aloud to the children.  There is also a book that you can print out that has the story along with simple pictures to help the children understand what is being read.
“God said, “Let there be lights in the huge space of the sky. Let them separate the day from the night. Let them serve as signs to mark off the seasons and the days and the years.  Let them serve as lights in the huge space of the sky to give light on the earth.” And that’s exactly what happened.  God made two great lights. He made the larger light to rule over the day. He made the smaller light to rule over the night. He also made the stars.  God put the lights in the huge space of the sky to give light on the earth.  He put them there to rule over the day and the night. He put them there to separate light from darkness.
God saw that it was good.  And there was evening, and there was morning. It was day four.”
NIrV (New International Reader’s Version)
Read the verses (story) to the children.  Point to the pictures as you read the story so that the children can better understand what you are saying.
Read the verses (story) again, but this time have the children listen for the word stars and have them hold up their stars for the rest of the story.

Discuss the Bible Reading
When you are finished reading the story the second time, ask the children the following questions so that you can know they understood it.
“Who was in the story?”  God
“What did God create in the story today?”  The Sun, Moon and Stars
“Why did God create these things?”  To mark the days, years and seasons
“What number day was it in the story today?”  Four

Bible Lesson Craft / Activity
Use the following activities to reinforce the learning goals. If time is short, move on to the evaluation portion of the lesson plan.
Activity: Sun, Moon and Stars Plate
“What did God create in our story today? (allow for responses)  Right.  He made the sun, moon and the stars.  That is what our project is for today.”

  • Give each child a paper plate and let them color one side yellow
  • Have the children glue the Bible Verse onto their plate onto the non-colored side (it will hold better).
  • Have the children glue the triangles onto the yellow painted side of the paper plate.  This is the sun side.
  • Have the children put the sticker stars on the white side of the paper plate. This is the moon and stars side.
  • Write each child’s name on their project.

Activity: Bible Verse Memorization
“God made two great lights.  He also made the stars.”  Genesis 1:16  (New International Reader’s Version)
Have the children do the following hand motions along with repeating the words after you, to help them learn the Bible Verse:
God”—the hand is raised to the heavens and then downward in a sign of respect
made”—the fists twist on top of one another, as if they were putting something together
two”—hold two fingers up
great lights”—the middle finger is flicks the front of the mouth
He”— the hand is raised to the heavens and then downward in a sign of respect
also made”— the fists twist on top of one another, as if they were putting something together
the stars”—the index fingers rub against each other as the hands are held up pointing to the sky
Genesis 1”—hold one finger up
16”—hold 3 fingers up (make sure it’s the middle three fingers) and twist the wrist
Do this a few times with the children.  Make it fun for them to do the motions and say the words.  Involving them in active learning is essential for memorization at this age.
Activity: Star, Star, Sun  (a.k.a. Duck, Duck, Goose)

  • Place the children in a circle and choose a child to be “the moon” or be it yourself.
  • “The moon” walks around the circle saying, “star”, until they want to choose a “sun”.  The “sun” then chases “the moon” around the circle and “the moon” takes “the sun’s” seat.

Evaluation:
“We are going to practice what we have learned so far about what God has created.”
“First there was darkness and light” (cover eyes with hands and then release)
“Then there was water and sky” (make waves with hands & arms & then wave up in the air)
“Then there were dirt and trees” (wiggle fingers in front of you for dirt & grow up like a tree)
“Then there were was the sun and the moon” (put arms above head and then like you are sleeping)
* Repeat the saying along with the hand motions.  Then ask the children what God created on each day of creation and have them do the motions by themselves and say what He did.

  1. What? This is a crude gesture (holding up the middle finger) in the United States.
“great lights”—the middle finger is flicks the front of the mouth

  2. Referencing my May 2, 2019 at 4:26pm submission, I would like to add that I really like your site, but this caught me by surprise!
