5 Things You Should Tell Kids in Your Church
Children’s ministry today seems so complicated, doesn’t it? When I began in children’s ministry in 1996, it was a bit simpler to teach. Kids weren’t as tech savvy and let’s face it–we didn’t have so many products to choose from. I’m not complaining, I love new ideas but the list of things you feel you should teach continues to grow. Doesn’t it? Let’s pare the list down! In my opinion as an experienced children’s minister, there are really five things you should tell kids. Of course, this isn’t meant to be an exclusive list. There’s a ton of things you can teach. These are MY top five!
Jesus loves you. You can’t miss, bore or confuse a lesson by teaching John 3:16. No matter how “smart” we get or how “spiritual” our kids get, this is always a good thing to tell kids. It can change their life.
God knows you. Read Psalm 139 to kids. God knows their name. He doesn’t just cast a casual eye over the crowd. No, looks for each person, each child. He’s familiar with how each person thinks; He knows what they need.
You’re a sheep. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.” I love this passage in Luke 12. It’s so comforting to know that you aren’t alone and that you belong to a special, gentle group of people that love God. Kids need to hear that they are not alone in their faith and that the Lord is the shepherd.
You are unique. โ€œBefore I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.โ€ Jeremiah 1:5 is probably my favorite verse. It speaks to the uniqueness of each person, each child. Kids need their uniqueness to be recognized. This verse is a good teaching verse to establish this point.
You are not alone. You never think about kids being lonely but loneliness is a feeling everyone experiences at times, some more than others. Teach kids that God will never kids alone. That truth will bring them peace for years to come.
