5 Flashlight Object Lessons about God's Light

Print Friendly and PDF

Jesus engaged his audience with object lessons, leading them into life-changing truths. Some examples he used that stand out to me are the tossing of seeds on the ground or even a plain cup of water. Today’s world has no limit on items available for object lessons. At my first ever kids’ ministry conference I learned how to present the gospel with common items from my purse or backpack. Since it’s full summer and so many kids are thinking about camping out, I decided to put my skill to use with a flashlight. (Flashlights in a darkened room make a terrific object lesson for kids.)
Over the years, I’ve used flashlight object lessons to demonstrate dozens of different scriptures and ideas. I hope some of my favorites could help you present the scriptures in a fun way. Turn off the main lights and flicker away! (All of these examples are from the NIV but you could use them easily for KJV too.)
God spoke light: Genesis 1:3 “And God said, let there be light and there was light.”  Show kids that power of God’s spoken word by demonstrating how He spoke life into being with His words.
Darkness into light: Psalm 18:28 “You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” God can transform sad, dark situations into something bright and wonderful.
Light of the world: John 9:5 “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Tell kids that the whole world was dark and lost – then Jesus came! (Flip on the light.) The Lord lights the way for men to be saved.
No more fear of the dark: John 12:46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” When I’m afraid of the dark, even when I can’t see, I know God is with me. His word says that when I believe in him, I am no longer in darkness.
What’s God made of? 1 John 1:5 “This is the message we have heard from him  and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” I say, “Ever wonder what God is made of? He is light and spirit! The Bible also says that in God there are no shadows.
Buy an inexpensive flashlight and some batteries and you will always have an object lesson handy!
